The New York Jets and their fan base had quite the scare on Wednesday, as head coach Todd Bowles announced that running back Bilal Powell would undergo neck surgery, which some ran wild with and called career-threatening.

Almost 24 hours later after the announcement, there was a bit of clarification from Bowles. The head coach said on Thursday that Powell is expected to make a full recovery following neck surgery, and it is not career-ending after all (though it will end his Jets career if he isn’t re-signed).

Bowles did say it was a misunderstanding on his part, mishearing the details of the injury. Powell was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday, which ends his 2018 campaign.

As mentioned, it is a similar injury to the one that wide receiver Quincy Enunwa had in 2017. Enunwa missed the entirety of the 2017 season, but made his return this year, where he once again plays a pivotal role in the Jets’ passing game.

During his eight-year tenure with the Jets, Powell has rushed for 3,446 yards and 15 touchdowns on 791 carries, while also catching 204 passes for 1,567 yards and five scores.
