Hey, it never hurts to ask. And to be fair, he did get himself a Patriots quarterback when all was said and done. But San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch will surely always have a good chuckle remembering one particular phone call he had with Bill Belichick.
As the defensive back-turned-exec told the “Pardon My Take” podcast, he just couldn’t resist asking about Tom Brady’s trade availability when the Niners and Pats had not yet found a way to come to terms on a deal for Jimmy Garoppolo.

Lynch is clearly not too bent out of shape about all this. But I’d surely pay a gigantic sum of money to have been able to hear the tone in Belichick’s voice after the brazen overture was issued.
Or, you know, whatever profanities or guttural noises he issued forthwith.
All’s well that ends well, as Jimmy G and the Niners actually own the NFL’s longest active win streak. But the big winner here is Lynch.
Hats off to a man who truly believes that nothing is technically out of bounds.
